NRCan Workshop

This interactive 2‑hour LEEP workshop will bring together utilities and incentive program partners to discuss barriers and opportunities to implementing best-practice heat pump retrofits.

Heat pumps remain a key decarbonization & conservation strategy for many utility & incentive programs; however poorly sized and designed systems, improper controls, and lack of commissioning results in lower than anticipated energy and cost savings, poor occupant comfort and over-reliance on back up heat.

While programs aim to promote best practices and high-quality installations, successful implementation can be challenging when trades and delivery partners do not have sufficient resources, training, or tools to integrate new requirements smoothly into their sales and installation processes.

This interactive session will work with stakeholders to embed best practices in their heat pump retrofit programs. Participants will learn about

  • The importance of proper sizing practices and tools available to HVAC trades & energy advisors to support accurate F280 load calculations
  • Accurate assessment of existing home infrastructure including existing ductwork, electrical panel capacity to avoid expensive and unnecessary upgrades
  • Proper controls settings to optimize heat pump performance and avoiding over-reliance on back up systems
  • A new ASHP Sizing & Selection app that supports trades, Energy Advisors and homeowners by providing clear comparison of heat pump performance and savings allowing system design to be based on more than just upfront costs

Using a regional lens and real-world case studies, LEEP will discuss market barriers and opportunities and leave participants with a package of practical, field-tested tools to support their trades  in designing and installing high performance systems that manage program costs, improve homeowner satisfaction and deliver the promised energy and GHG savings.
